My colleagues and I have noticed that there are many studies and discussions on the prevalence of students experiencing depression symptoms and how we can combat that. But there aren't as many studies discussing why students experience depression to better understand what can be done to prevent full on depression. Speaking from a 21 year old POV, this is one of the hardest transitions of my life so far. Many times parental/peer support is the best thing to keep me going. If I did not have the familial support I have, I cannot say I would have followed through.

Parental support during college has been associated with a variety of positive outcomes, with students who feel supported by their parents reporting lower levels of psychological distress, experiencing fewer feelings of loneliness (Hall et al., 2017), reporting higher levels of social adjustment, and experiencing more positive relationships with friends (Mounts, Valentiner, Anderson, & Boswell, 2006).
